Other Foran families

A man named John Foran was living at Tromra in 1817. Another John Foran was living in Tromora in 1834, on the same piece of property as the John Foran of 1817. However, he was no longer living on the same property after 1855. He may have married Bridget Stackpool, and had two known children that were baptized in the parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane: 1-Thomas Foran (on Dec.12, 1868, sponsors John Considine and Meary Egan): 2-Patrick Foran (on March 15, 1873, sponsors John and Nancy Lawson). Keep in mind that our own James Foran was living in Tromora at least by 1871, and the family was still there in 1876. I suspect that he was a brother to the aforementioned John Foran, and that the father of the pair was the elder John Foran of 1817.

A man by the name of Patrick Foran, who married Mary King, also had two known children that were baptized in the parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane, namely: 1-Michael Foran (on Aug.23, 1862, sponsors Edmond Pierse and Bridget King): 2-Bridget Foran (on June 26, 1870, sponsors John and Susan McGenis). This Patrick Foran may well have been a brother to the above mentioned James and John Foran, who were also living in the same area, and whose children were all baptized there between 1859 and 1876. It is also very likely that the Ellen Foran who sponsored the baptisms of our ancestor James Foran's children, was a sister.

John Foran submitted the following information:

A John Foran and Bridget O'Brien lived at Rineen in the 1870s. Some of their children are:

1-Patrick Foran, b.Nov. 22, 1872:

2-John Foran, b.April 1, 1874:

3-Michael Foran, b.June 29, 1875:

4-Jacob Foran, b.Sept. 29, 1876:

5-Thomas Foran, b.June 11, 1878:

6-Maria Foran, b.Feb. 8, 1880:

John continues - "I have not yet established a connection. Rineen is a townland 3 or 4 km north of Milltown Malbay. It is in the civil parish of Killmanaheen. Ennistymon is the RC parish, the Poor Law Union and Civil Registration District". Compiled 13 Nov. 1998

Other Fennell families

A Michael Fennell and his wife Mary Glynn, who lived in the parish of Kilmurry-Ibrickane in the 1860s, also deserves mention. They had three known children, namely: 1-Margaret Fennell (baptized June 11, 1865, sponsors Michael Crowly and Margaret Madigan): 2-Patrick Fennell (baptized March 3, 1867, at Craget, sponsors John and Margaret Glynn): 3-Mary Fennell (baptized at Cragaknock on April 4, 1869, sponsors Michael Carthy and Margaret Halloran). I suspect a relationship between this Michael Fennell and our own Thomas Fennell.

Other Cosgrove families

One of two Cosgrove families that bears considering is that of Michael John Cosgrove, who married Mary Hare. They had four known children that were all baptized in the same church that our ancestors attended, St. Patrick's RC Church in Galway, namely: 1-Mary Cate Cosgrove (on Feb.5, 1895, sponsors Patrick Lydon and Linnia Sills): 2-Bridget Cosgrove (on Aug.28, 1900, sponsors Thomas Lydon and Mary Duggan): 3-James Cosgrove (on July 4, 1907, sponsors John and Mary Morris): 4-Patrick Stephen Cosgrove (on Sept.5, 1917, sponsors Sam Cosgrove {is this our Sam Cosgrove, s/o John Cosgrove, who is buried in common grave with Jane (nee Cosgrove) Fennell?} and Honora Maguire).

The other family is that of John Cosgrove and Honora Catherine Keating. Their three known children were also baptized in St. Patrick's: 1-Shiela Marie Cosgrove (on Aug.20, 1911, sponsors Michael Fennell {is this our grandfather?} and Helen Cosgrove): 2-John Nicholas Cosgrove (on Dec.2, 1912, sponsors Peter Cosgrove and Anna Coyne): 3-Bridgid Catherine Cosgrove (on Sept.6, 1916, sponsors Peter Cosgrove and Rose Keating). I strongly suspect that these families are related to our own Cosgrove ancestors. This could well be the John Cosgrove whose headstone is in Rahoon Cemetery, Galway. It reads as such:

Sacred Heart of Jesus
Have mercy on the soul
Of
John Cosgrove
Died 25 March 1897
R.I.P.
Erected by his loving
Wife Nora and Family
